BLOG 5: きみたちわどいきるか

I read this review of Miyzaki's きみたちわどいきるか (translated "How Do You Live?" although its more widely known English title is The Boy and the Heron): https://jp.ign.com/how-do-you-live/69330/review/.

The author basically posits that Miyazaki's animations have this unparalleled ability to engage the audience's senses, and in this way,きみたちわどいきるか diverges from the "modern realism" we so often see in contemporary animated films. I completely agree with this point, and I first noticed this when I watched Howl's Moving Castle.

The article really reads into the film. It suggests thatきみたちわどいきるか was a mechanism for Miyazaki to explore his emotions on his personal relationships, particularly with his own mother, through the portrayal of various maternal figures. I don't know if Miyazaki himself has commented on this, but his films are so often a kind of autobiographical reflection, so that makes perfect sense to me.

I've yet to watch the movie, but I've been meaning to (haven't decided whether I should watch it dubbed or subbed).
